As your loved ones start to age, you may notice a lot of changes in their health. They may complain more about aching joints, back pains, showing signs of arthritis, or high blood pressure. It is common for those who are nearing the age of 60 to be experiencing these kinds of problems, especially high blood pressure or Hypertension. But, what does it really do and how will you know when your loved one is in danger of having it? You may have to look at three factors, namely:
- Age
- Weight
- Diet
The first one, of course, cannot be helped but you may just be able to do something with the other two. It is quite tempting to just let your elders eat whatever they please, just because they deserve the bliss that comes with eating the first bite of a really good, fatty dish. But, that should not be the case in their age. Getting older means their immune system is weaker, and they are more susceptible to diseases especially if they are not careful with what they feed their bodies.
Helping them maintain a strict diet would be the best thing to do, especially if you think that they are little overweight. It may be hard for them to adjust at first, but there are a lot of recipes out there that indulges the palate. You just have to make sure they are not too oily or too rich with unhealthy sugars that would put them at risk of Hypertension. Getting them a nutritionist or a dietician would help reassure you that they are given the right kinds of food to eat.
They can also do some of the following exercises below to keep them in shape:
- Tai-Chi
- Walking/Brisk walking
- Yoga
- Stretching
It would be great if you could assist your seniors throughout these different exercises. Make it as a bonding activity. That way they will be more motivated to stay with the exercise plan. There may be quite a few things that you would have to keep up with so your seniors stay healthy throughout their retirement.
